Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons means ‘like the boys’ and is derived from Françoise Hardy lyrics. Although it was originally chosen for its euphony, it has proved to be apt for designs that have challenged the female ideal. Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo established Comme des Garçons in 1969 in Tokyo (the company’s first menswear line debuted in 1978). Kawakubo maintains sole control over the company and notes that liberty is her core motivation- she needs to be independent and to be able to express herself freely. Kawakubo’s influence on the history of fashion has been extremely significant- she has challenged convention in every way, her designs do not relate to those of other designers, nor are they influenced by other fashion eras. She claims that her clothes are expressions of her inner life- ideas, feelings, intuitions- and are often asymmetrical and deconstructed in some way.
